One of The Most Scenic Drives in the U.S. Is Now Open for Summer - Here`s What to Know

Of the 63 U.S. national parks, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most popular, with more than 11 million visits in 2025. The park has mountains, forests, and waterfalls, but it is best known for its scenic drives, all 384 miles of them, which lead to panoramic views, historical buildings, and hiking trails. On April 1, one of the park’s most popular drives, Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road), opened for the summer season, kicking off several road openings expected to follow. The scenic, two-lane Kuwohi Road runs from Newfound Gap Road to the Kuwohi Visitor Center, which is the starting point for several hikes, including the 0.5-mile route up Kuwohi, the tallest peak in the Smokies. At the 6,643-foot summit of Kuwohi is the iconic Kuwohi Observation Tower, which juts out over the landscape providing a birds eye view over the park. Other to-dos off Kuwohi Road include the 3.6-mile round trip hike to Andrews Bald, which known for its summertime flowering azaleas, and the Charlies Bunion segment of the Appalachian Trail, which runs through forests of spruce and fir for 8 miles round trip. Kuwohi Road is the second seasonal route to open for the summer, following the opening of Forge Creek Road on March 6. Shortly after the opening of Kuwohi, Little Greenbrier Road to the Little Greenbrier Schoolhouse opened on April 3. Next up is Rich Mountain Road on April 10, then Parson Branch Road and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail on May 1. The Heintooga Ridge Road is expected to open on May 15, while the Heintooga Round Bottom Road and Straight Fork Road do not yet have a set opening date. These seasonal roads, which close over the winter, join routes within Great Smoky Mountains National Park that are typically open year-round, including primary roads like the Newfound Gap Road (US 441), Little River Road, and the Cades Cove Loop Road, and secondary roads like Upper Tremont Road, Wear Cove Road, and Cataloochee Road.
